Notice Of Civil Service Examination

City of Hurst, TX will be giving an entrance examination for Firefighter at 9:00 A.M. on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at the Hurst Justice Center, 825 Thousand Oaks Drive, Hurst, TX 76054.

Minimum requirements are:

  • Between the ages of 18 and 35
  • Certified or licensed as a Paramedic by the Texas Department of State Health Services or have a National Registry Paramedic Certification. Current Paramedic students anticipating graduation in May 2026 or who have a course completion certificate will be allowed to take the test; they will not be eligible for hire until they have met the State of Texas certification/licensure requirements.
  • Honorable discharge, if served in the military
  • Vision of 20/40 or better, corrected to 20/20 with no color blindness
  • Required to become certified as a structural fire fighter by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection
  • Pass physical agility test given by Tarrant County College within the six months prior to appointment or within 90 days of being appointed
  • In addition to above minimum requirements, must:
  • Pass written examination
  • Pass a background check
  • Pass an Oral Review Board
  • Pass a polygraph examination
  • Pass a medical examination with drug screen
  • Pass a physical agility test

The eligibility list created as a result of this entrance examination will be effective for 12 months from the date of the written examination or until exhausted.

Minimum requirements for employment as a firefighter:

  • Must be a citizen of the United States and be able to provide documented proof of identity and employment eligibility.
  • Must be at least 18 but not more than 35 years of age.
  • Certified or licensed as a Paramedic by the Texas Department of State Health Services or have a National Registry Paramedic Certification. At the time of entrance examination, applicants must provide evidence of Certification (or Licensure) by the Texas Department of State Health Services or National Registry Paramedic Certification.
  • Must possess a currently valid Texas driver's license with a good driving record and be able to obtain a commercial driver's license.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a rigid physical examination.
  • Must possess visual acuity of 20/40 or better in each eye, correctable to 20/20 binocular vision and no color blindness.
  • Must possess hearing to the equivalency of 15-15 (be able to hear a whispered voice 15 feet).
  • Must successfully pass a physical agility test given by Tarrant County College within six months prior to appointment or within 90 days of appointment. If hired by the Hurst Fire Department, the successful appointee will be reimbursed the cost of the physical agility test given by Tarrant County College.
  • Must successfully pass a polygraph examination.
  • Must have an honorable discharge if served in the military service.
  • Must not be addicted to any barbiturate or narcotic or the excessive use of alcohol.
  • Must be of good moral character and reputation. Convictions or pending charges of any crime involving moral turpitude will disqualify an applicant.
  • A thorough investigation will be made of applicants. Any misrepresentations or vital omissions in the application will be grounds for refusing admission to an examination, for rejection after certification for appointment, or for dismissal after being appointed.
  • Cannot be a relative of a present Fire Department employee.
  • Ability to become certified as a structural fire fighter by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. If hired, new employees will be sent to the fire academy at the discretion of the Fire Department.

  • High School transcript (from last high school attended)
  • Certification as an EMT-P, Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic, by the Texas Department of State Health Services or National Registry Paramedic Certification
  • DD-214 (long form - member 4) - if served in the military
  • Course Completion Certificate from attended Paramedic Program (if not TX DSHS certified)
  • Documentation showing graduation date of Paramedic Program (if not TX DSHS certified)
